How to Drive Safely in the Colder Months

At Serviceco we take our customers safety very seriously. We have put together some tips to give HGV drivers a mind refresh, on how to drive more safely in the colder months.

Before any journey you will need to conduct walk around checks, but when driving in poor weather conditions we suggest taking extra care when checking the below:

  • Tyres – check for wear, pressure & balance
  • Battery – check power & charging system
  • Windscreen wipers – check they are moving freely, fit for purpose and washers working and not frozen.
  • Fluid levels – must be topped up
  • Lights – fully functional
  • Exhaust – ensure its clear e.g. from snow and structurally sound.
  • Defrosters

Along with inspecting the vehicle before the journey, it is important for a HGV driver to be prepared for any situation. In order to be prepared we suggest taking the following with you:

  • De-icer and ice scraper
  • A high visibility jacket
  • Extra food & water
  • Jump leads (for yourself or other vehicles)
  • A torch
  • A shovel and bag of salt or sand
  • A blanket
  • Enough fuel – depending on the length of your journey

We also suggest checking the weather conditions beforehand as this may cause road closures in the area that you are travelling. If you do decide that the roads are safe enough to drive on, then make sure to drive carefully by:

  • Holding your distance in between you and the vehicle in front
  • Avoiding sharp movements as may cause you to lose control
  • Slowing down
  • Using your indicators and blink 4/5 times before moving lanes
  • Driving smoothly

Whilst you’re driving, look out for hazards that may affect your driving and adjust/ react appropriately:

  • Black ice
  • Fog
  • Heavy rain
  • Bridges

Be careful also when entering and exiting your vehicle as it can be slippery, so make sure to take your time. If the weather conditions are too poor for you to drive in, then stop in a safe place until it is clear enough for you to drive again.
